Nice tribute to Deano

deanoI read a great tribute to the recently retired Joe Deane on Setatnta recently. It was written by Seanie McGrath.

Some excerpts

“I had a feeling Joe’s retirement was coming, because looking at him last year, I’d say it was like one last hurrah. It was great for him that he had the qualifier game against Galway because he was absolutely outstanding and he reeled back the years that night with four great points.”

“I don’t think there are enough scoring forwards in the game at the moment; I don’t think that there are enough scoring forwards in the Cork team at the moment. Cork are losing a scoring forward. Joe will always score, not only from frees, but from play. Joe will always get you two or three points, no matter what game it is. Whether it was a National League game or an All-Ireland final, Joe always delivered.”

“From the chants the crowd gave, it was pretty obvious that he was adored by the Cork public. For some, ‘Deano’ can equate to ‘Keano’ – one is idolised just as much as the other. The Cork public is losing an idol; they are losing a fantastic player and a scoring forward. There is no forward out there who can catch him within Cork and there may not be for some time to come. ”
