New Laptop

Got my new laptop today! A very shiny Dell XPS M1530. It looks good so far. Click here for a good look at it.

It came with Vista (yuck) pre-installed. Seems wicked fast so far. The only thing I am still trying to get the hand of is the finger print reader. It doesn’t like me. Oh and it has no modem so when I am back in Millstreet it looks like surfing the net is out of the questions.

I think I am going to leave Vista on a partition so I can play games and maybe use some of the Media Centre functions but as all of my Music and Videos are going to be in a soon to be install KUbuntu partition I don’t know how useful that is going to be. Maybe there is a way Vista can read ext3 so I can use them. We’ll see.

I am going to install KUbuntu on it soon and I’ll update the blog with any issues I have in the hope it may help someone else.

Sweet!! Nice lappie! Was the a work purchase or a personal one? Its alot easier to access you ntfs partition from KUbuntu so why not put your media on that partition! Accessible from both then!

Sexy … It’ll be grand for a bit of parno …. mmmm

I wonder is Ubuntu parno compatible…

Have fun getting the wireless card to work, in any reliable way shape or form .. ARGH !! :D ..

No hassles with the wireless. Works out of the box. Fecking only issue is there is a MediaDirect button on the front of the laptop which boots an embedded XP partition. When you shut it down it writes some crap to the MBR and hoses my grub. Even rebuilding grub from a boot CD doesn’t work. Idiotic fecking button. SO I am going to overwrite the embedded XP with fluxbox and if I still have the same problem I’m going to DD the disk.

Oh and it’s my personal laptop. And I didn’t realise ntfs-3g had a stable release. Thanks brimur!

No prob, does it look like the one from the link you gave to the Dell site? Thought it was more snazzy looking. I watch the tv show the Big Bang Theory and they all have wicked looking XPS’ ( http://www.blurayfreak.com/Dell-Blu-ray-Notebook-XPS-M1710.jpg). You should def pimp it!
