View the Winter Solstice at Newgrange via Webcam

December 21st, 2007 Leave a comment Go to comments

Newgrange InsideHeritage Ireland have set up a live webcam in Newgrange for the Winter Solstice event. Once a year, at the time of the winter solstice (shortest day of the year), the sun shines directly along the long passage into the chamber for about 17 minutes as it rises and illuminates the chamber floor. The alignment with the sun is too precise to have occurred by chance.

You can view the webcam from 08:30 on the 21st and 22nd of December.

View the webcam here.

UPDATE: A good ol’ public sector. The site is down so it looks like we are not going to be able to see it. However it is being broadcast via satellite as well.

I thought it might go down so I dug the server out of the heitageireland page yesterday. Here is its archive link if you missed it.
