The Wind that Shakes the Barley

Just saw The Wind that Shakes the Barley recently. Fantastic Film! Speaking as someone who grew up in the area the film was based and having grown up listening to stories from our history, I must say it was very true to life. The locations were in Cork, the accents was pure Cork. The images, costumes and little props were perfect.

They even referred to the British Troops as the Auxiliares which most films overlook. Preferring to call them Black and Tans, but they were hardly any Black and Tans in Cork. The Auxiliares were basically the Black and Tans commanding officers during World War One. So basically they were demobbed, demoted and deported to Ireland. So not in the best of form to say the least! Which was borne out in their actions.

Nice to have a real Cork based War of Independence Story since we basically won the thing! The Brother against Brother aspect of the Civil War was well done also.

Great Film. Highly recommended.

I think my Grandparents would have enjoyed it.

Well, ye may have won the war (although I’m not sold on that) but ye certainly started the civil war now didn’t ye?

I’d agree btw, it is a great film. I thought that the Cillian Murphy was fantastic, as was the Delany fella who played his brother.

And apologies for the spam-like-ness of this next bit, but I couldn’t see an email address so figured comments was the best way. I’ve recently started a new site, called On the Ditch http://www.ontheditch.net which is a community site where users can submit their own stories/news/articles and then others can vote and discuss them. It is organised sorta like digg.
The subject of the blog is Irish sports, and I’ve noticed that you have quite a few posts on the topic, so if wanted to submit links, or just take a look it’d be great.
    Cheers
